How to Install Your SunShift Dongle: A Step-by-Step Guide

This guide will walk you through setting up your SunShift dongle and getting it connected to your solar system. Follow these steps carefully to ensure a smooth setup process.


1. Download the Xemote Mobile App

  1. Install the App

  2. Open the App

    • Once installed, open the app to begin the setup process.
When opening the app for the first time, you will be asked to allow notifications. We recommend you allow notifications so your SunShift system can notify you of issues or events such as grid power lost.  Notifications which you are subscribed to will be editable in the near future.


2. Connect Your Phone to Your Wi-Fi

  1. Confirm Connection

    • Make sure your phone is connected to the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network that you intend to connect the SunShift dongle to.
The SunShift dongle only supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks and will not connect to a 5G network.
For the setup to work correctly you must be on the network that the dongle must connect to.


3. Log In or Register

  1. Create an Account

    1. If you’re new to Xemote, register a new account by clicking the "Register" button on the login screen.
    2. Enter your phone number to receive an OTP.
    3. Enter the OTP that you received via SMS.
    4. Enter your name, surname, email, and create a password.
    5. Verify your email to complete the registration.

  2. Log In

    1. If you have a Xemote user account, log in with your email and password and continue from Step 4.
Please check your junk/spam folder for the verification email. This email can take up to five minutes to arrive in your mailbox.


4. Create Your Site

Your location is used only to determine your load shedding area and for accurate solar forecasting and is in no way accessed by the app at any other time for any reason. 
    • On the home screen, tap the “plus” icon at the bottom right on your android phone or top right on your apple phone to start creating your site.
  1. Grant Permissions

    • When prompted, grant the app permission to access your location. This is necessary to set up your site correctly.
  2. Enter Site Details

    • Name your site and select the correct load shedding area. If your load shedding area isn’t listed, follow the instructions provided in the guide.


5. Add Your SunShift Device

When prompted to allow camera access, please allow so that you can scan the QR code on the side of your SunShift dongle which is your device Registration Key.
If at any stage you exit the device add process, you can start again by clicking the plus to add a device and scan the QR code mentioned below.
  1. Access Device Addition

    • On the home screen, tap on your newly created site. Then, tap the "plus" icon at the bottom right to add a device.

  2. Scan the QR Code

    • Name your device and click on the "Scan QR Code For Registration Key" button to use the app’s camera to scan the QR code on your SunShift dongle.

  3. Tell SunShift about your Solar System

    1. Select your inverter type.
    2. Select your battery type
    3. Enter your battery quantity.
    4. Enter your number of panels.
    5. Enter the Watt rating of a single panel
    6. Submit


6. Connect Your SunShift Dongle

If you already connected your SunShift dongle. Please disconnect and reconnect it to restart the 1 minute Wi-Fi configuration process. 
Ensure your phone is connected to the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network you want the dongle to connect to and that you have the Wi-Fi password ready.
  1. Remove the old Dongle

    1. The old dongle may be fastened with two screws to your inverter. Unscrew these if necessary.

    2. Remove the dongle by pulling down.

  2. Connect the SunShift communication cable:

    1. Remove the SunShift communication cable from its packaging.

    2. Plug the cable into the inverter where you just removed your old dongle.

    3. Secure the cable by fasten the screws on either side of the connector. 

  3. Connect your SunShift dongle.

    1. Plug the other end of the communication cable into your SunShift dongle.

    2. The orange light will be on if the Dongle is connected and being powered by the inverter.

    3. The green light on the dongle will start flashing slowly as it attempts to connect to a Wi-Fi network. 

    4. After a few seconds the Green light will flicker quickly, indicating it is ready for Wi-Fi setup.


7. Connect SunShift to Wi-Fi

If the green light on your SunShift dongle is blinking quickly then it is ready for Wi-Fi configuration through the app. 
If the green light is blinking slowly, follow the alternative setup method or disconnect and reconnect your SunShift device to restart the Wi-Fi configuration process.
  1. Enter Wi-Fi Details

    • Confirm the Wi-Fi network name displayed is the Wi-Fi network you want the dongle to connect to.
    • Enter your Wi-Fi password for the Wi-Fi network displayed in the app to connect the SunShift dongle.
    • The green light on the dongle will stop flashing and stay on when connected.
  2. Troubleshooting


8. Subscribe to Activate

  1. Complete Subscription

    • After adding your SunShift device, tap on it and click to subscribe.
    • Complete the checkout process to activate the device.
  2. Begin Saving

    • Once activated, your SunShift control is live, and your solar savings will begin immediately.
